Photo BLOG

Project Introduction:

This is the first project given to us for Effective Public Communication which is a group project where we have to visit a specific location and research on that area. The area chosen must be a street with ongoing activities where communication can be carried out between people. The main objective is to understand interaction between people and people, area and even the activities carried out in that area.

After understanding the area, 20 photos have to be taken based on the following criteria which portray life in the following areas:

1. People (ethnic background, gender, age, description of clothes)

2. Food (food available, food presentation, hawker stalls, restaurants)

3. Activities (activities in the location, activities carried out)

4. Cultural Conservation on Buildings / Architecture (facade, interior, exterior design, ornamentation)

A short description of the picture has to be written by applying the principles of communication and behaviour in analyzing the interaction between individuals. From the analysis, a photo blog must be produced and designed to portray the communication and interaction in our chosen location.

Location chosen: Jonker Street, Malacca.

Project Process:

We travelled to Jonker Street in Malacca to carry out our activities. There, we took pictures based on the criteria needed according to the brief. After completing the task, we have compiled all the photos taken and chosen the final 20 photos to be placed in the blog.

We have also written captions of each chosen photo and prepared the blog.

Reflection:

I enjoyed doing this first Effective Public Communication project very much because we were allowed to complete this project freely at our own will with the group members of our choice. It had very few criterias to follow in which we were allowed to complete the project anyhow we wanted to. Not only that, we were allowed to choose our desired location which made this project even more enjoyable.

Honestly, this project was different from what I expected. I initially thought that Effective Public Communication was plainly talking to people on the streets, understanding people and trying to help them with their problems. But this project proved to me that I was very very wrong about this subject. This subject has made me understand that communication does not only have to be verbal, it can be interactions between people and people, people and spaces and many more.

It surprised me that we did not have to do much speaking in this first project, we just needed to understand and analyze everything about the location we have chosen. Since we have chosen Jonker Street, Malacca which is Hui Teng's hometown, we had our very own tour guide to bring us around. We had a chance to roam the area on our own, exploring the place at our pace to complete the project. This made it more like a trip with friends than a project. Even if we had tasks at hand, we were ablet o enjoy ourselves.

This made me understand that the aim of this project is not only about understanding communication and interaction, it is also finding the joy of interacting with others and your group members. I am very glad and grateful that my group was placed together because we would be able to spend time together hanging out as friends and working together well. It is a bonus that this project is a photo blog because I love both photography and blogging. This is why it is one of the most enjoyable project that I have been a part of in this semester.

In conclusion, this project is a non-stressed project where we could complete most of the tasks freely with out own style and creativity. It was a very interesting project to work on with the people you enjoy and love working with.
