DAILY ITEMS ARTWORK EXPLORING PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN

Project Introduction:

This is the second part of our first project which is carried out as a group of 4. In this project, we have to use given materials to create abstract art by enhancing the material's special characteristic. 9 abstract art has to be produced and created using the given material, when all 9 abstract art is combined with each other, a 10th artwork has to be produced.

All 10 abstract art, including the 10th artwork if possible, has to protray principles of design. We have to study and understand the physical characteristics of the material given, base for each given artwork, fictures, connectors used and attachment method (no glue allowed) and design principles to be implemented in all the 10 artwork.

A theme has to be selected in order to link and tie up the 9 artwork. Two A2 presentation boards have to be produced which explains each artwork design principle, design elements and composition that has been applied to each abstract artwork, including the 10th artwork. Elaboration on the theme, ideas and technique to make the artwork can be included in the presentation boards.

Material Chosen: Newspaper

Project Brief:

Project Process:

Tutorial Sessions

We had tutorial sessions where we had small and short presentation about our weekly progress during classes. This was to show our lecturer weekly progress of our work in order for them to give us suitable feedbacks and comments in order to improve on our artwork.

We also had a small pin up tutorial where we had to explain about the physical characteristics and meaning behind our material. We also showed progress on our actual artwork during that pin up tutorial session.

Pin up information & research

Mock ups using our finalized materials and base

Self Exploration & Preparation

We began with research on the characteristics // origins of newspaper and the physical characteristics of newspaper to understand more on our given material.

After the research session, we started to discuss about methods on making the artwork based on the most suitable physical characteristic of our material. We have decided to twist the newspaper and came up with a concept based on the relation between "twisting" and "newspaper".

Finally, we started to explore on different ways to protray create our artwork based on our concept and method of making the artwork.

Reflection:

Initially, I was a little disappointed in the outcome of this project because at some point of time, the information given during tutorial and the comments given during presentation. The feedback contradicted itself a lot. We have improvised and worked on our project based on the comments and feedback given during tutorial session. However, after we have made those improvements, during the presentation, we were re-commented on those changes. It created a lot of confusion for us because of the contradiction between tutorial session and the presentation.

However, my group and I have no one to blame because the outcome of the project was due to the fact that we have cluttered too much information in our final outcome. There was too much information to absorb due to the length concepot we have presented during the presentation, too many abstract explanation on feelings and emotions. It was not easy to absorb the information given as a listener.

I think that the most valuable lesson in this project was not only understanding of design principles but knowing that giving out too much information and concepts can be dangerous during presentation.I have learned a lot from both academic wise and experience wise. I have understood the need to fully understand the material’s characteristic before starting to work on it in order to maximize it’s full potential. It is also important to understand the feedback given and not just sulk over the bad grade.
