BETTER CITIES OF THE FUTURE-PAMPHLET
This is our second project for Elements of Natural Built Environment where our project is split into two main tasks where one is an individual task and the other is a group task. In this project, we will be imagining ourselves as the mayor of a city and we will have to propose a new city for the people to live in. The new city has to be livable and functional in order for the people to move and carry out their usual living ways there.
For the individual task, we are required to produce a folded pamphlet to promote the new city development. However, before planning for the city, research and investigation has to be carried out in order to understand what a city is, its development and history components and elements of a city. The research, analysis, draft sketches and planning will be submitted as an additional A4 process journal compilation.

Project Brief:
Project Process:
In the beginning of this project, I started off by researching about cities and what makes a city an actual city. In the research, I have covered the understanding of ancient, present and future cities. From the research, I have learnt and understood the requirements, necessity and elements of a city. Not only that, by understanding the past ancient cities, I have realised that architecture in the past was incredible as they did not have as much technology as present times but are able to create strong, liveable and sustainable underground cities with proper road routs, air ventilation, etc.
After completing the research, I have started to plan for my city. For my group, we have chosen underground/ cave as our city location. Eventually, I have decided to choose a cave from Langkawi as my city location.
It was difficult for me and there were a lot of problems during each tutorial session because of the layout plans of my cave. It had shown that one time of research is never necessarily enough to be able to completely understand an area. During each tutorial, I had to struggle through planning and designing the city over and over again.

From this individual part of the project, I had learnt a lot as it has taught me to do proper research to be able to investigate and fully understand a topic. Initially, I had not much of a clue about the difficulties in planning a city. I have taken everything for granted from the road systems to the location of my house. City planning everyday lifestyle is not an easy task because we have to understand the environment, the culture, the people, and place suitable infrastructure or utilities in that area.
From this topic, I have worked on how to analyze the information gathered properly and express it in my own method and style. Analysis plays a very important part of information gathering and application as it needs critical thinking. By continuously working on our critical thinking skills, it will allow us to step out of our comfort zone and explore further. For example, after fully understanding a topic, I can come up with a conclusion in order to sum up our collected information and also brainstorm on application or relation of that topic to our daily lives.
This individual research part has also taught me on the importance of understanding history and the past in order to be able to apply the knowledge or technology at that point of time in the presence or in the future. From my research on underground cities, architecture from the past can be extracted to be used in the present times because their architecture has firm structures, technology to ensure survival and proper planning to ensure there is enough room and utilities for everyone living there.
It is also important to understand the are we are building our city at. In my initial plan, I did not consider the natral environment as part of the architecture so I went with building a city in the cave (my chosen location). However, this was not how it should be. From the tutorial session, I have realised that architecture is not only about building a building, it is about building according to the environment, surrounding and culture. By utilizing all of these factors, we will only be able to build an actual livable city. For example, in my cave, I have made use of the cave walls by carving houses into them which utilizes the available feature and provides a natural feel.
Although it was tough having rejection for each tutoria class. My group had to do double work each week as we had to not only complete the tasks to be shown on that tutorial but also improve on the previous tutorial. It was difficult keeping up with all that workload as most of my work had to be redone many many times until the final pamphlet was produced. However, everything was worth the stress and workload because honestly, I have learnt alot of city planning from these tutorial sessions. The most important thing I have learnt was to make full use by utilizing the natural resource provided by mother nature.
