BASIC ORTHOGRAPHIC DRAWINGS USING DAILY OBJECTS

This is the second project given to us for Introduction to Drawing which is an individual project. This project is the start of technical drawing which mainly uses proper tools and stationaries such as circle template, set square, artline with various tip size, technical pens, etc. These tools and stationies are required for technical drawing.

From this project, students are required to choose an object within A5 size-based (not smaller or bigger than A5 and must have a level of complexity). Students are to sketch, conduct measurements, and draw the chosen objects. Students may refer to external resources and references to explore the applications of Drawing Conventions and generate orthographic drawings which can express the 3 dimensional objects.

Using the measurements and information gathered on the selected object, students are to generate orthographic drawings. All drawings are to be composed in an A5 accordion-style booklet.

Project Introduction:

Project Brief:

As techincal drawing is a new skill which has yet to be learnt, we have had several lecture classes teaching us about the fundamentals of technical drawings. These lecture classes mainly lectures us on methods to use tools as part of the technical drawing. The remaining skills (drawing) is to be picked up by constant pratice and feedback from lecturers on how to improve the drawings.

My object has varied initially from a watch to a cow decorative item to a keypad phone (final chosen object).

TGC Aquired:

As for someone like myself who is inexperienced in art and drawing, technical drawing is like a whole new dimension and experience for me. Due to the lack of art and drawing in my previous years, the lectures about technical drawing is like an eye opener towards drawing in the construction industry. Never have I thought that technical drawing is more of a skill based drawing than an artistic and creative type of drawing. From the basic lectures and tutorial sessions, I have came to understand that technical drawing is all about controlling the lines with the approporiate tools and stationaries.

While practicing on drawing, I have managed to familiarize myself with the tools and stationaries. For stationaries, line weight (which shows the actual characteristics of the object) can be shown and managed by choosing the right pen. Each pen has its own thickness ranging from 0.05mm to 0.8mm which is a wide range to choose from and utilize while drawing. Other than that, I have learnt how to use tools such as circle template, french curve, and compass to achieve a smooth line in drawing. A combination of these tools allows me to obtain the shape I require in a neat and easy method. From all these drwing practices, I have started to get used to using tools while drawing.

Also, I have learnt to take measurements properly in order to generate proper orthographic drawings that can clearly express the 3D object that I have chosen. By applying the technical skills which I have previously picked up from practicing, I can observe and draw plan views, elevation views, sections, detailed drawings and prespective views of an object.

Finally, I have researched on architecture handwriting and tried to write using architecture writing as this is one of the main requirements of this project.

In conclusion, I have managed to identify the fundamental principles and techniques in sketching and drawing orthographic drawings.  I am able to observe an object and then organize, interprete and translate the object into 2D views on paper. This enhances my visual communication skills which is fairly important for future exercises.
