DESIGN PROCESS

This is the second project for Constructed Landscape (CL) which is Design Process: Research & Analysis. This project is divided into individual task and group task.

For the group task, we have to select one landed residence which is at least the size of a semi-detached house with an open space within the boundary. After selecting the house, students must attain the base plan of the house and are to carry out a site visit along with their group members and carry out a site survey. During the site survey, group members have to conduct a site inverntory and analysis of the existing condition based on the site location, topography, drainage, vegetation, microclimate and others.

After the site survey is carried out, the information has to be gathered and compiled.

Site Survey

Discussion

Carrying out a survey around the house by analying the area such as determining the sun direction, drainage and measuring the area of the house

After carrying out the site survey, we discussed about the work division and planned how to organize the site inventory. My task was to determine the site location and content, identify the observed views with explanation and also colour the drawn plans.

Reflection:

This is the group task of this project where we had to do a site survey as a group and come up with a design solution to improve the architectural landscape of the house we have chosen. Initially, my group did contributed in carrying out the site survey which was conducted at my house. We worked on measuring the area, making observations discussing about the project and we even assigned tasks for each and every person.

However, things did not go as smoothly as we thought it would be and we ended up  in a chaotic situation a few days before the submission date. The first mistake we have made as a group is being too dependable on each other to the fact where we relied on each other too much. We kept depending on each other to finish the task assigned yet not initiate any meetings or discussions among ourselves. As a team player myself (in my secondary school activities), even if i wasn't the leader of this group, I could have initiated meetings or discussions after noticing the lack of communication and interaction we had for this project. However, I did not do so, I waited and depended on the other team members to start on the project.

The outcome of this project has taught me the importance of proper planning, teamwork and time management. Without proper planning in the initial stage of the project, we would have no direction to head on to which causes procrastination and delay in our work. By having proper planning in the beginning, the group would have managed to assign proper tasks to each other and work together as a team to complete the task. As a group of 6 members, teamwork and team spirit is actually one of the main factors to a successful outcome. We did not work together much as a group until the very last minute and did not manage to fully utilize each others talents while doing this project. From this, I have learnt that communication is a necessity and is very important when working in groups. As for time management, I think that I have had very bad time management with this project. Everyone, including myself, were to immersed and focused on other subjects and individual work until we neglected this project.

However, I was glad that our group eventually understood the crisis we were in at the very last minute. We have experienced frustration and panick together when realizing that submission date was down to only two days away. It was then we properly sat down and worked with each other. Thankfully, everyone cooperated by giving their full effort and time to complete this project. I will try to not wind myself up in the same situation again in the future, this project is like a constant reminder for myself to never neglect the importance of communication between group members and to not depend too much on your group members to initiate discussions.

Other than reflecting on the problems which have occured, I have also learnt academic and architecture related knowledge from this project. I have understood the basics of brainstorming for a good design layout according to the existing topography, microclimate and other existing characteristics of the area. It was a good practice for beginners in landscape architecture.
