DESIGN PROCESS

Project Introduction:

This is the second project for Constructed Landscape (CL) which is Design Process: Research & Analysis. This project is divided into individual task and group task.

For the individual task, students are required to produce a graphic journal which comprises of a series of elements such as vegetation, natural elements and hardscapes. The graphic journal is a sketch journal with the combination of different elements in landscape architecture.

Graphic communication skills and lectures related to this topic is taught and partially guided in class.

Project Brief:

Project Guidelines (Briefing) :

As graphic communication skills and lectures related to this topic are taught and partially guided in class. Also, the lecturers have provided a brief guidance and example on the project with related sketches. Rechnique to draw and sketch elements of landscape architecture such as shrubs and trees are taught during lectures and tutorials. There are sample sketches and drawings as examples to be traced (optional) in the sample below.

In this individual task of the project, it was my first time being exposed to drawing elements and representations of architectural drawings. I have realized the importance of self research in order to further understand more about a subject or topic. Listening to lectures and attending tutorial classes is just the tip of the iceberg where lecturers teach you the most basic and beginner part of the subject. By researching deeper in the subject, I have managed to gain knowledge on the study of landscape architecture (mostly on drawing elements such as trees and plants). For example, I have watched online tutorials on how to draw plan and elevation views of softscape such as trees, shrubs and palms.

Other than that, it was my first time using marker to colour. Therefore, I had to do additional research on learning the basis or colouring with marker. After plenty of practice on colouring with markers, I finally got the hang of it and decided to give it a try on my graphic journal. I was quite glad that my work turned out quite satisfying as I, honestly, am not an artist. From this experience, I have understood the reality behind "1% talent, 99% hardwork"- when you have no talent, all you can do is do more than 99% of hardwork. I looked at how easily other people got the hang of using markers as their colouring medium whereas I had to ask around, do plenty of research and have continuous pratice before deciding to use markers for colouring. Therefore, I have felt the needs of putting my wholeself into drawing and continuous effort before being able to produce what I think is the best I could have done.

I have also understood the importance of proper graphic communication which is basically drawing each and every element properly. By doing so, others can easily interprete our drawings correctly and this will reduce the chance of being misunderstood. Also, this is the basic of landscape architecture and all the knowledge gained in this part of the subject will be brought forward to the next few projects in this subject and our future architecture studies.
