HANGING DISPLAY MODEL

Project Introduction:

This is the second part of the second project which has relation to the ongoing DPJ assignments. It is an individual project whereby each student has to carry out their experiments, process and final outcome on their own.

Students are required to understand, research, study, investigate, and explore on a chosen Lego character. All forms of data collection about the Lego character will be translated into ideas, inspiration, design, sketches, and words, to be complied as understandings of the Lego character.

It is a design process which is ongoing until the final model design. It familiarizes students with the information gathering and idea transformation process. Through the DPJs, students will be able to develop and explore ideas for the final Hanging Mobile Display.

Lego Character Chosen: Harley Quinn

Project Brief:

Project Process:

From DPJ 3, I have converted my initial ideas from sketches into actual 3D hanging models.

I explored a variety of materials which are suitable to be used together with my Lego characer- Harley Quinn.

I came up with many mock ups for the first tutorial session with my lecturer Ms Renee. All the initial mock ups were made based on my sketches and designs.

However, I had to stick to reality while completing the model and not everything could be as perfect as designed. Therefore, there were many modification depending on the situation at hand.

Exploration of material

These are my experiments outcome for my hanging mobile display mock ups.

They are mostly made from balsa wood, needles and wire mesh which will be my final chosen material to use in the final Hanging Mobile Display.

These are my progression which have transformed from a random complicated model to a very complicated, crazy, insane and pained model at the end of the project.

This is my first mock up where random pieces of balsa wood are pinned together with pins and needles. There are random pieces of cut, scratched, and shattered pieces of perspex.

This is the second mockup which is pathological.

The black corrugated plastic indicates the layer that surrounds Harley.

The silver paper pierces and intersects out of it showing that her emotions, personalities and inner thoughts are being expressed painfully

This is the third mockup which portrays extreme pain (my word- anguished) where the sharp pointy aluminum, wire mesh and silver paper part act as something piercing though Harley’s heart

This is also a progress from the previous mock up.

I have added a part to make the design even crazier. I have added uneven surfaces, wire mesh that intersects though the core and different lengths of needles.

This mock up is derived from the first mockup which comes from the word pathological.

The outer core acts as Harley’s heart which is expressing different personalities which can be dangerous or normal (contrasted surface) Ms Renee has started that the design is too calm.

It looks dangerous but it needs to be crazier in order to properly show and express the word “pathological”.

Ms reenee has also suggested for me to include a variety of needle with different length so that it seems more dangerous and less even.

This is another mockup which shows pain (anguished) coming out from Harley in all directions

This is my process of the final lego hanging mobile display and presentation board.

I have taken and listened to each comment the lecturers have said and improved my model based on their feedback.

From the past few mock up models, I have continuously improved on the models by adding additional parts which causes the surface of the model to be uneven and even crazy.

Instead of only doing solid geometrical shapes, I have had hollow geometrical shapes too in order for the “inside part” to be able to “come out” easily. It also allows people to witness the inner parts of my model.

These are the following progress of my final model.I have completed the final form which is very irregular. I have done them all in separate pieces (3 in total) then joined them up together using more needles and pins.

All the additional parts (cut wire mesh, uneven balsa wood surface, needles) were added bit by bit.

Finally it was hung and attached to a wire mesh which I have bought. Although the pins and needles may prick me sometimes, but that does not stop me from completing the project. Since Harley Quinn has experienced such pain in her story, it is reasonable for her hanging mobile to look similar to what she has gone through.

I have designed my presentation boards based on the word “pathological” which means extremely insane and crazy in short.

I have used collage method to complete and design my presentation board because Harley Quinn is a person in pieces who is trying to patch herself up which indicates the pieces of paper I am sticking together on the presentation board.

It will have distorted shapes to indicate her incomplete, crazy, and distorted mind. The colours mostly revolve around red, black and white which are the basis of her colours. Her colours indivate extreme ends of the colour chart which can be related to pathological hich means extreme mental illness (extreme ends of the colour chart).

The presentation board has a circular flow where the middle of the board goes in a circle to the bottom then right back up to the top.

Final Model:

These are pictures of my final hanging mobile display of Harley Quinn.

The design is based on the word “pathological” which means extreme mental illness caused by her hallucinations due to the fact that she was hurt deeply.

Each part of the hanging mobile display portrays a part of Harley which is related to the word “pathological” too.

The distorted structure shows her abnormal mind, the needles and pins show the pain she is suffering and the pain she is bringing to others too, the inner self which is a smoother surface shows that deep down inside she is still normal, the uneven surface shows that she is trying to express herself by showing all her different personalities, and the wire mesh show how drastic and different her personalities can become of.

Reflection:

This was my alltime favourite project even if it was very stressful towards the end, I have enjoyed myself the most in this project. Before this semester when I looked at the previous senior’s work, I could not believe myself doing this project down the road in 6 months’ time because I was shocked at their models designs and drawing.

Back then, I was weak in drawing so I was afraid of completing this project. Honestly, I was secretly wishing that we have done another project. But my achievement today did surprise me. This eventually ended up as my favourite project and it was by far my most enjoyable individual project.

I think that the most important thing is to fully understand your Lego character, who in a way, is your customer. By fully understanding Harley Quinn’s needs, characteristics, behaviour and all, I was able to come up with the perfect design to explain her pathological self.
